This is a question I get asked from time to time and just last night I was having a discussion with a client around this. So what’s better for fat loss….. LIFTING WEIGHTS OR CARDIO?

Hands down without any question at all what gets you burning fat and looking lean is when you’re burning more calories than what you are consuming. OK so how best do we do this….. Should we go for an hour steady state walk to burn fat via our form of cardio or should we lift weights at a high intensity to burn the fat we want? Without any doubt in my mind the go to option to lift weights and here is why…

  1. When we lift weights at a high intensity we are burning masses amounts of calories but not only that we CONTINUE to burn them for hours afterwards due to getting the heart rate so high.
  2. When we lift weights to burn calories we start shaping, toning and building that lean muscle that we all know and love.
  3. Being a cardio bunny for hours on end dips into our muscle stores. So by opting to do cardio for long periods instead of lifting weights sure you will obtain fat loss to some degree absolutely but at the consequence of using up some of your muscle tissue.
  4. Instead aim to use cardio as an ace card up your sleeve to ASSISTĀ with fat loss but by opting for lifting weights each session as a first priority and then most importantly progressing with those weights you are going to build that lean muscle, burn fat AND build strength at the same time which let’s be honest feels great.

So in conclusion we always want to choose lifting weights over cardio as a first priority. Cardio is to be used as an added extra to assist with the process but lifting weights at a ridiculously high intensity, then progressing with your weights each week along with of course your nutrition should ways be number 1.
